Learn Vista - About Windows Vista

When writing this article, Windows Vista is the newest Windows released by Microsoft. It is a graphic based operating system for home and business user, mobile, and media center.

Microsoft initially announced "Longhorn" codename on July 2001, it is before the release of Windows XP on October in the same year. Longhorn was expected to be sold in about 2003. But on August 27, 2004, Microsoft then announced the significant change to Longhorn. And on November 8, 2006, Microsoft finally released Windows Vista as the change of Longhorn for business user, and then for home user on January 30, 2007.

Inside Windows Vista, Microsoft has added and enhanced many new features. Some of the features are:
- Windows Aero, is the abbreviation of Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open (AERO). This new interface is aimed for aesthetic display such as the support for 3D graphic (Flip 3D), transparent window, animation, and other visual effects.
- Windows Sidebar, is a long, vertical bar that is displayed on the right side of desktop. It provides easy access to frequently used tools called gadget.
- Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, Windows Media Center, Windows Live Show, and so on.

Not all features which are planned to be integrated in Vista, can finish on time before the release of Vista. The features are then forced to be cancelled, among other things:
- Win FS, a new technology for file system.
- Windows PowerShell, is a command line interface (CLI) and scripting language which is being developed by Microsoft.
- PC-to-PC Sync, is a peer-to-peer technology that performs synchronization of folders among Windows Vista based computers.
- et cetera.

Besides that, Microsoft also removes some Windows XP features such as Windows Messenger and MSN Explorer, as well as replacing some features like NetMeeting, replaced with Windows Collaboration, and so on.

With the nice and powerful additional features which need faster processing and great resource of computer hardware, Windows Vista can not be installed on old or slow computer. According to Microsoft, computers that are able to run Windows Vista, are classified on two kinds: Vista Capable and Vista Premium Ready. Vista Capable computers need minimally 800 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and graphic card which supports DirectX 9. Whereas Vista Premium Ready computers need at least 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and graphic card with 128 MB memory and supports new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM).
