Learn Vista - Windows Vista Editions

Windows Vista is distributed in 5 kinds of version namely 4 versions for retail and 1 version for corporate edition.





Windows Vista Home Basic.
This version is the simplest version among other versions. It's interface is limited to standard one and it doesn't have AERO visual feature, a feature that makes Windows visual layout looks like transparent glass. Nevertheless, built-in programs inside this edition are complete enough for home users, such as Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Mail.




Windows Vista Home Premium.
This edition is aimed for home and mobile users. The content includes features on Home Basic Edition plus AERO feature and Windows Media Center, as well as enhancement of security, networking, and features that support productivity. Other supremacies are endorsement for Tablet PC, backup programming, and also creating and editing DVD content. Also some additional supports for Windows Movie maker.




Windows Vista Business.
This edition is designed to meet small business need. It's features concern the capability enhancement in networking such as the use of VPN services in office work, connection to a corporate domain, monitoring employee's computer use, and son on. It's weakness is located on the unavailability of Windows DVD maker or Windows Media Center.





Windows Vista Enterprise.
This edition offers multiple licences for  large companies, so it's not sold as retail product. Supporting more than one language for it's interface layout and the usage of encryption facilities of Windows BitLocker. For a company that has many computers to upgrade, using this edition is a good enough solution.




Windows Vista Ultimate.
This edition combines all features from other editions optimally. Those are including AERO visual interface, high security feature, additional facilities for networking, newest Media Center features, et cetera.





Different with previous versions of Windows, you can upgrade your Windows Vista Edition to the higher one, namely:
- upgrade from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate.
- upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate.
- upgrade from Windows Vista Business to Windows Vista Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate.
- upgrade from Windows Vista Enterprise to Windows Vista Ultimate.

Upgrade can be performed by starting Windows Anytime Upgrade from %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. Or using another way namely click Start on taskbar, then type Windows Anytime Upgrade, then press ENTER. Then the window appears. Just follow the instructions there and don't forget to be connected to internet before doing upgrade.
