Learn Vista - Managing Icons on Desktop


There are several ways to manage icons on desktop:

Showing and Hiding Some Important Windows Icons:

Important icons meant here, are Computer icon, Network icon, Recycle Bin icon, and so on. To show/hide them, as follows:

1. Right-click on empty area on taskbar, then click Personalize.




2. Click Change desktop icons text.




3. On Desktop Icon Settings window, you can show/hide icons and change their picture, as described below:




4. Click OK or Apply button to finish. If you wish to invalidate, click Cancel button.


Customizing Icons' View

You can decide the size of icons on desktop (large, medium, and classic) and how they are arranged. You can also empty all icons on desktop (not delete them) and show them back. The steps are: Right-click on empty area of desktop, then click View. Here are the descriptions:




Arranging Icons Based on their name, size, type, or date (Sorting).

In order to sort icons, right-click on empty area of desktop, then click Sort By, and then choose/click one of the options:




A Shortcut to resize the picture of  icons

This shortcut is a combination of keyboard and mouse actions, namely:
Click on empty area of desktop, then press and hold CTRL button on keyboard, and then rotate the mouse scroll button. Scrolling up will enlarge all icons, whereas, scrolling down will lessen all icons.
