Actually, the Windows search index improves the efficiency when you are performing a search. However, this feature is running in the background, so that it will affect your computer performance, even though not very much. In Windows Vista, you can prevent the Windows search index from scanning a certain drive.
To disable the Windows search index on certain drives:
- Open Windows Explorer (press CTRL + E ).
- Right-click the drive on which you want to disable the Windows search index. Then click Properties.
- In the General tab, clear the Index this drive for faster searching check box.
(Anytime, if you want to enable the search index on this drive, just select this check box).
- Click OK button.
